The best-managed teams in the NHL: No. 30

Which NHL teams have delivered the best on-ice performance in combination with bang-for-your-buck use of salary cap space? To determine the best-managed teams, we calculated which squads, in the four years leading up to this one, accumulated the most points using the least amount of cap space. Teams that manage their office HR or marketing aren’t the focus here.

It doesn’t take many bad contracts to put already wobbly teams over the edge. The Vancouver Canucks are hurt here by the fact they were coming toward the end of the Sedin era over the course of these years, and they made the situation worse by throwing the truly horrifying Loui Eriksson deal on top of it.

Although there is reason for hope with the additions of Elias Petterson and Brock Boeser via the draft, the Canucks were still outside a playoff spot when the season came to a halt. The massive disparity between the Petterson line’s possession numbers and the rest of the team’s also suggests there’s a ways to go.
