Daily NHL picks: December 10, 2019

There’s a big slate in the NHL tonight, which means there are a good number of intriguing games worth considering.

Here are the ones I think have some value.

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-153)

The Habs are only three games removed from a seven-game losing streak. A trip to Pittsburgh doesn’t bode well for them staying on the winning track. Carey Price isn’t much of a defence against Malkin and Co. Overrated team and goalie.

Detroit Red Wings at Winnipeg Jets (-216)

The Red Wings are in freefall and are in the league basement in almost every statistical category. I don’t love that Laurent Brossoit is starting this one for the Jets, but it’s hard not to fade Detroit right now.

San Jose Sharks at Nashville Predators (-164)

The Predators have been letting bettors down all season, but I don’t hate the price at home against a very terrible Martin Jones (.889 sv%).

New Jersey Devils at Dallas Stars (-201)

I worry that there’s a chance for some upheaval here with the sudden firing of Jim Montgomery, but who knows, maybe the players didn’t even like him. If you’re going to try and get the train back on the tracks, you could do worse than the Devils as a road opponent.

Carolina Hurricanes (-115) at Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are one of the teams I just don’t find all that credible as a top-tier squad. Any backslide by Mikko Koskinen could spell disaster. Can’t say I ever really trust Carolina’s goaltending either, but Edmonton actually hasn’t been all that good at home this year, despite leading their division.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Vancouver Canucks (+110)

The Leafs continue to fail to live up to high expectations, so I’m not sure why they’re a road favourite on the West Coast against a not-terrible Vancouver team. Still really inconsistent since the coaching change.
