NHL picks for March 27, 2017

There are six NHL games to choose from tonight, and a couple of them are worth a look from a value perspective. Let’s get to it.

Chicago Blackhawks -103 at Tampa Bay Lightning

As I wrote in this piece over the weekend, the Chicago Blackhawks are one of the most undervalued teams in the NHL season. A quick reminder of what $100 bets on every Chicago game would have returned heading into the weekend games.

The trend continues here as they face an admittedly surging Tampa Bay Lightning squad. For all its recent success to climb back into the playoff race, the Lightning are still a negative goal differential team facing maybe the best team in the Western Conference. I like the Blackhawks in this spot, especially as a small underdog.

Detroit Red Wings +165 at Carolina Hurricanes

Here’s another case of a pretty bad team getting a pretty generous line due to a recent stretch of good play. The Carolina Hurricanes still have unrealistic fantasies about making the playoffs this season, and clearly people are buying the resurgence of their terrible goalies as a sustainable thing. Detroit is likely to lose this game, but probably not as often as the line suggests.
